Federal energy credits available in 2009

In 2009, you can improve your home and earn tax credits for it as the same time! The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act will give you federal tax credit when you make energy efficient improvements to your home between January 1 - December 31, 2009. (Improvements made in 2008 are not eligible for a tax credit.)

You can earn tax credits of:

  • Up to $200 for windows
  • Up to $500 for exterior doors and storm doors
  • Up to $500 for insulation

  • Under the tax credit guidelines for insulation, siding and laminated panels (such as Prodigy) do not qualify. Drop-in insulation does qualify.

Do you qualify for the $2,000 tax credit?

Home builders also can earn a $2,000 tax credit if they own a new energy efficient home that achieves a 50 percent energy savings for heating and cooling over the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and supplements. At least one-fifth of the energy savings must come from building envelope improvements.
