PRESS ROOM
A HEALTHY DOSE OF SUNLIGHT
You've heard many reports about how the sun's ultraviolet rays can damage your skin,
and even cause skin cancer. And while it's true that you need to protect your body
against UV rays, it is also important to remember that sunlight and natural light in the
right dose may actually benefit your health.
USA Today reported on a University of Pittsburgh study this year that demonstrated that
sunlight actually reduces the need for pain medication. In the study, surgery room
patients who were exposed to lots of natural light took less pain medication and,
consequently, their drug costs ran 21 percent less than equally ill patients assigned to
darker rooms. Sunlight also showed to decrease stress levels as well.
Natural light is already used in a number of therapeutic applications, such as seasonal
affective disorder, certain sleep problems, depression and jet lag. Many are starting to
see the health benefits of proper lighting.
An appropriate dose of sunlight seems to be just what the doctor ordered. So spend time
during your day today in a brightly lit space--especially spaces with windows, skylights
and courtyards, if possible.
