Types of Window Frames
When you select windows for your house, you have many choices to make. One of those choices is the type of window frame. Here’s a quick overview of the types of window frames on the market:
Wood Window Frames: Wood windows are those in which all of the framing members - jams, sills, stiles, rails, mullions and muntins - are made of wood. Often favored because of its appearance and traditional place in house design, wood windows provide a variety of advantages, including that it acts as a natural insulator. Wood is also warm in appearance and can be painted or finished to match any decor. Wood, however, is not the most durable window frame material because of its susceptibility to rot.
Vinyl Window Frames: Vinyl windows are made of a very versatile plastic with good insulating value. Vinyl window frames do not require painting and have good moisture resistance. Because the color goes all the way through, there is no finish coat that can be damaged or deteriorate over time - the surface is therefore maintenance-free. Some vinyl window manufacturers offer surface treatments like laminates and coatings.
Composite Window Frames: Wood/vinyl composite window frames combine the strength and stability of wood with the low-maintenance features of vinyl. The material is resistant to changes in temperature, contracting minimally in heat or cold. It’s an excellent insulator by preventing heat or cold transfer into or out of your home. With composite wood/vinyl frames, you never have to scrape or paint. Some manufacturers even offer warranties against rotting, warping, and cracking.
