PRESS ROOM

It's not something we like to think about, but property crime is something that affects millions of people each year. But you don't have to live in fear. Taking a few simple steps can help you live prepared - and with peace of mind.
- Keep all doors and windows closed and securely fastened.
- Secure sliding glass doors with a metal rod or piece of plywood in the track and install vertical bolts.
- Always lock the door to an attached garage.
- Make your residence appear occupied by using timers on lights, radios and televisions even when no one is home.
- Install outdoor lighting.
- Keep shrubbery trimmed away from entrances and walkways - they provide a hiding place for burglars.
- Organize a community watch program to protect your neighborhood. An alert community is a safe community.
- Hollow-core doors are easier to break through, so they should be replaced with solid wood, fiberglass or steel doors.
- Make sure that the door hinges are on the inside, rather than the outside. This prevents would-be intruders from removing the pins and pulling the door out of the frame.
- Invest in high-quality deadbolt locks for all exterior doors
- If you have double-hung windows, insert a metal bar in the track to prevent opening.
