DOWN ECONOMY SPURS HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

A recent national poll by Angie’s List reported that 50 percent of those surveyed believe that the down economy actually makes it a good time to take advantage of home improvement deals, possibly even make their houses more sellable when the market turns upwards again. A minimal investment now may make a big difference later. Here are some home improvement projects you may want to consider:
Programmable thermostat: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a programmable thermostat can reduce heating costs by up to 35% and cooling costs by up to 25%. Furnaces and water heaters also are available as energy-efficient appliances.
A “new” room: Do you have an underused dining room or another room that could serve another purpose, such as a study, library or in-law area? You can get a “new” room in your house without building on or incurring huge costs by reinventing existing space in your house.
Window and siding replacement: Not only can window or siding replacements change the curb appeal of your house, but they can provide all sorts of energy efficiencies, as well as safety from the elements. In fact, anything to do with making your home more energy-efficient – insulating, reinsulating and caulking – is a good project to undertake in 2009.
Landscaping: Planting flowers or shrubs in your yard adds a finishing touch to your curb appeal—and probably just makes you feel good!
