ACHOO!
Allergies are often associated with the springtime and the pollen in the air. But what most people do not realize is that our homes can provide a "field" of allergies as well. Fitted carpets, soft furnishings and central heating have all contributed to an increase in indoor allergies. Here are some of the most common:
- House-dust mite: As the most common household allergy, dust mites cause sneezing, wheezing and itchy eyes. They live in house dust--those tiny specks that you see floating in the air when the sun shines through a window. And even though we don't see them, they settle on furniture, bedding, toys and carpets in our house.
- Pet-dander: Pet dander is the second most common household allergy. Cats are much more allergenic than dogs, but small pets like rabbits and hamsters can also be a problem. Animals shed dander that becomes part of the house dust.
- Moulds: Another common household allergy, moulds thrive in humid atmospheres in our homes.
Combating Household Allergies
Below are some tips to help you shoo the allergies outside:
- Do regularly damp dusting of shelves, window ledges, etc.
- Keep bedding simple. Layered bedding is heaven for the dust mite. Also consider using mite-proof mattress and pillow covers that can be removed and washed frequently.
- Vacuum carpets and furniture at least once a week. Use a microfiltration vacuum bag, or attach an external filter.
- Keep pets out of bedrooms and limit the areas of the house that they can go into.
- Use a de-humidifier can help to discourage mould growth.
